There are two types of crypto games developers. The first are those who take an already existing concept from the traditional gaming industry and add blockchain to it as the “selling point.” The other tends to just take inspiration from the classics, rather than develop an exact copy.
Dead Knight seems to be a hodgepodge mix of different ideas. First of all, the name mentions knights, which have been quite popular in the indie gaming sector with games such as Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight gaining great acclaim. On the other hand, it seemed to me like a pixelated version of Castle Crashers when I first saw the screenshots.
After I checking out the gameplay video, I realised that it is in fact a classic JRPG in the same vein as Final Fantasy.
In terms of the crypto side of the game, it is based on the Solana blockchain, and the developers have promised an in-game marketplace, farming, PvE, and championships implemented by the end of this year. A closed beta is scheduled for Q1 2022.
On the Flipside:
- Many buttons on the game’s website simply don’t work, and so the landing page feels quite raw, though it looks quite nice design-wise.
- The game’s whitepaper is noticeably brief. The developers have also not disclosed any gameplay mechanics at all.
Conclusion
The project looks interesting, especially design-wise. I’ve got my eye on Dead Knight, however, I’d like to see some gameplay before adding it to my proverbial wishlist. So far, the project is nothing more than a pack of collectibles.
